The Technology Application and Promotion Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-TAPI) conducted 43 intellectual property (IP) audits and nine IP roadshows from 2016 to 2019.
The audits and roadshows were made possible through the “Support to the Commercialization of 500 DOST-Generated Technologies and Strengthening the Country’s Intellectual Property and Technology Portfolios” or DOST 500 Project.
An IP audit forum was held on 29 October 2016 at the Catanduanes State University (CSU) in coordination with the CSU Research and Production Affairs

DOST-TAPI deployed in-house and licensed patent agents to identify local technologies qualified for IP application and valuation.
“We conduct the IP audit in various academic and research institutions in order to assist them in obtaining new IP protection from their funded projects and researches especially for technologies developed through DOST’s assistance,” said Atty. Marion Ivy D. Decena, Officer-in-Charge of DOST-TAPI.
She added that an IP audit usually takes one day depending on the number of technologies to be evaluated.
However, in line with the Department’s recent instruction to focus IP protection towards accelerated and prioritized commercialization, the approach was remodeled in 2019.
DOST-TAPI has then upgraded the approaches for IP audit to ensure the market-readiness and smooth commercialization of the technologies developed by the DOST Research and Development Institutes (RDI).
The specialized IP audits were conducted in the Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI), Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI), Metals Industry Research and Development Center (DOST-MIRDC), Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI), Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), and Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI).
“We are optimistic that gradually, our RDIs will start to realize the value of innovation and its consequent effect on the country’s economy. Moreover, we envision a country that will effectively utilize technological innovations,” said Ms. Glenda Rima, Program Manager of IP Valuation.
IP Awareness Campaign
Meanwhile, in order to boost the awareness of the scientific community and highlight the significance of IP protection prior to public dissemination of technologies, a series of a nationwide event, “IP Roadshow,” was organized.
During the IP Roadshow, the basic IP rights, the DOST-TAPI’s programs, and the revised Implementing Rules and Regulations of the Philippine Technology Transfer were discussed.

The nationwide IP roadshows were conducted in Ilocos, Cordillera Administrative Region, Eastern Visayas, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Western Visayas, Caraga, Cagayan Valley, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Central Visayas.
